Vermeer painted this around 1665, and it isn't a portrait. It's a tronie: a Dutch study of a head, built around an expression and a costume rather than a sitter. The turban is exotic dress, nothing anyone in Delft wore. The pearl is too large to be real, and it isn't painted as an object at all. Two strokes of white, one thick dab at the top, one soft reflection at the bottom picking up her collar. There is no hook. It exists entirely as light.
